Joel West's family and friends often refer to him as "The Renaissance Man" and it's not too difficult to figure out why. He is passionate about a variety of things, including photography, carpentry, landscaping, acting, writing, modeling, and most recently, parenting. And his enthusiasm, talent and hard work ensure that he excels in all of them. His struggle has often been deciding where to focus his attention.
Growing up on a dead-end, country road in Indianola, Iowa left West with a lot of idle time. It was in this setting that he discovered he was wildly imaginative, and a talented little carpenter. He spent much of his childhood creating and building things, having learned by watching his father build cabins, horse barns, wood-stoves and cabinetry. He was especially proud of his role in the construction of a rodeo arena where his dad and grandfather team-roped, and his mom ran barrels. West went on to work for two different construction companies in Iowa, roofing houses, and building barns.
At age seventeen, Joel West was approached by a modeling scout while on a youth group trip at the Mall of America. Soon he found himself halfway across the globe in Paris, France. The transition was overwhelming, but he was quickly distracted by a busy modeling career that took him all around the world. He worked with nearly every major designer and photographer in the industry, and did campaigns for Armani, Versace, and Calvin Klein, with whom he landed an unprecedented exclusive contract (Underwear, Collection, Eyewear, and the fragrance Escape with Milla Jovovich).
After Paris and Barcelona, West spent a couple of years in Manhattan, but decided that California was more his speed, so he moved to L.A. to pursue an acting career. He buried himself in his work -studying, writing, starring in plays, and acting as producing-director of a small theatre company. It was here, once again, that he put his carpentry skills to work, helping to design and construct sets. Joel West also acted as the in house photographer for all productions.
Next came television and film. West started booking guest star roles on various shows, including Charmed, Felicity, American Dreams, The Division, Star Trek: Enterprise, and a recurring role on CSI: Miami. He also played the lead in several independent films, and wrote, produced and starred in a short film about the life of a boxer, entitled The Journeyman.
And as Morphosis put it last January, Joel West is back in the modeling industry !
